The Civil Rights District Tour delves into Birmingham's pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement. The journey begins at Kelly Ingram Park, the epicenter of civil rights demonstrations that highlighted the bravery and determination of countless activists and foot soldiers, followed by the historic 16th Street Baptist Church, forever etched in history by the tragic 1963 bombing that killed four little girls. From there, the tour visits the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, where participants will explore poignant exhibits that chronicle the relentless struggle and extraordinary triumphs of the movement. The tour concludes at the AG Gaston Motel, a pivotal meeting place for civil rights strategists, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Fred Shuttlesworth, and is a testament to African American entrepreneurship and community leadership. Throughout the 1 ½ -hour experience, attendees will gain a profound understanding of the events and figures that propelled Birmingham to the forefront of the fight for equality and justice.
Transportation will be provided to/from Kelly Ingram Park and the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel.
Attendees must obtain their event credential from the conference registration desk located near the Sheraton registration counter and provide it to the tour coordinator before boarding the shuttle/embarking on a guided walking tour.

The Carver Theatre in Birmingham will host a special screening of "The Shuttlesworth Documentary." Attendees will enjoy a 50-minute screening that delves into the life and legacy of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, a fearless leader in the Civil Rights Movement known for his unwavering commitment to justice and equality. Reverend Shuttlesworth was instrumental in founding the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights and co-founding the Southern Christian Leadership Conference alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His relentless activism, including surviving multiple attempts on his life, played a crucial role in desegregating Birmingham and advancing the cause of civil rights across the nation.
Following the film, a brief panel discussion will feature the daughters of Reverend Shuttlesworth, who will share personal stories and answer questions, offering an intimate glimpse into their father's enduring impact and the ongoing struggle for civil rights. This event promises to be a powerful journey through history, filled with educational and emotional moments that highlight the enduring fight of the Civil Rights Movement.
The film screening begins at 6:30 p.m. and concludes at 8:00 p.m., CST. Shuttle services will be provided to and from the Carver Theatre and Sheraton Birmingham Hotel, ensuring a comfortable and convenient experience. Attendees must have their conference credentials to attend the screening.
